A day workshop on Update of Scientific knowledge in MDR-TB Management
On the 2nd of July 2022, DF-GMRTC facilitated “A day workshop on Update of Scientific knowledge in MDR-TB Management” targeted towards Laboratory scientists and clinicians who work at the forefront of Multi-drug resistant TB diagnosis, Treatment and care.
The welcome address was delivered by Prof Cadmus, the director of the DF-GMRTC centre, where he gave background information about the centre. He then recognized the workshop as the first workshop of the centre, and shows his anticipation for more international training opportunities such as this.
The host, Dr. Fadeyi introduced the workshop facilitators in the persons of Dr. Alberto Piubello (National Consultant, Damien Foundation Belgium, Brussels Office) and Dr. Osman Eltayeb (Senior Technical Advisor, Damien Foundation Belgium, Brussels Office).
Dr. Alberto Piubello presented on “Basic concepts on Anti-TB Drugs’ resistance” where he talked about the causes of TB Resistance, laboratory techniques for resistant TB diagnosis, and different drugs used in combating multi-drug resistant TB.
Dr Osman Eltayeb presented on the basic principles of MDR TB Treatment and different drug treatment regimens.
For his closing remarks, Prof. Cadmus identified the need for a re-training around the interpretation of Lab results and encouraged the use of the more recent GeneXpert and 10-column Cartridge.
